Canadian War Heroes: Ten Profiles in Courage
March 15, 2005This book is a collection of profiles exploring the many facets of war heroism and chronicling the lives and deeds of 10 of the most important figures in Canadian history.
It supplies a good measure of quirks and controversies as well, such as the fact that none of the first four profiles are on people actually born in Canada, or that one of this book's most well-known subjects, ace World War I pilot Billy Bishop, has also been accused of having lied about most, if not all, of his 72 victory claims. Then there’s the small detail that the very last chapter isn’t the profile of a person, but rather, an entire regiment.
Each chapter offers a snapshot of the remarkable lives lived and battles fought by these very different Canadian heroes: Sir Isaac Brock, Tecumseh and Laura Secord in the War of 1812; the Marquis de Montcalm in the Seven Years' War; Alexander Roberts Dunn in the Crimean War; William Avery "Billy" Bishop, Sir Arthur Currie and Georges-Philéas Vanier in World War I; Roméo Dallaire in the UN peacekeeping mission to Rwanda during the Rwandan Genocide; and finally, the entire Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Regiment, which has fought in nearly every important Canadian battle from the Great War up to the recent NATO strike against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan as part of the War on Terrorism...
